We all know the term “Dream Big”. As parents or educators, it’s only natural that we want what’s best for our children. But every so often we think, should we be more realistic and keep our child grounded instead?
A study “All I have to do is dream?” published in 2022 would tell you otherwise. The importance of our role is fostering a sense of belief and possibility in our children, as it shapes their future success. Nurturing big dreams in kids is not only about encouraging them to think big, but also about empowering them to believe in themselves and their abilities.
“All I have to do is dream”
The British National Child Development Study followed 17,000 people born in the same week in 1958 for almost 60 years. The researchers found that our aspirations are often influenced by our parents’ social and economic status, and their hopes for us. So, if our parents have high aspirations for us and are well-off, we’re more likely to have high aspirations too.
They also found that aspirations can impact achievements. Even after taking into account our family background and abilities, having high aspirations can help children do better in school and work. It’s like having a goal and working hard to reach it.
Overall, having high aspirations can motivate our children to achieve more in life. It’s important for parents, teachers, and society to support children in setting ambitious goals for themselves and provide the resources they need to reach their aspirations.

Importance of Encouraging Big Dreams
Self-confidence: Children develop a strong sense of self-belief and become more resilient in the face of challenges.
Motivation: When children have something they are deeply passionate about, they are more likely to work hard, stay focused, and continuously strive for self-improvement.
Goal-setting: The child will learn the importance of setting goals and creating a roadmap to achieve milestones to their growth. They also learn to navigate obstacles and find creative solutions to overcome challenges along the way.
Exploration and growth: When they are given the freedom to dream freely, they are more likely to conceive novel ideas and solutions. This can be highly valuable in different aspects of their lives, such as academics, career prospects, and problem-solving capabilities.
Independence: By pursuing their dreams, children develop a sense of independence and autonomy, which builds their decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Sense of purpose and direction: Achieving their dreams has shown to greatly contribute to their overall happiness and fulfilment in life.
Impact of Limiting Beliefs
Limiting beliefs can have a detrimental effect on children’s aspirations. When children internalize negative beliefs about themselves or their abilities, they often become hesitant to pursue their passions and take risks.
Limiting beliefs can inhibit creativity, self-expression, and personal growth. Therefore, it is crucial to identify and address these beliefs early on, replacing them with empowering beliefs that inspire and motivate children to dream big.

What Can Parents Do to Encourage Big Dreams?
Setting the Stage with a Supportive Environment
Encourage their passions: Recognizing and nurturing the distinctive talents and capabilities your child has is essential. Give your child ample chances for exploration and growth. Inspire them to try new activities and encourage them to pursue them wholeheartedly.
Celebrate their successes: Be it small or big, recognize and celebrate your child’s achievements. This will boost their confidence and motivate them to dream even bigger.
Nurture a growth mindset: Teach your child the importance of resilience, perseverance, and the power of a positive mindset. Help your child understand that setbacks and failures are actually good opportunities for growth and learning.
Set high expectations: Believe in your child’s potential and set high expectations for their future. Show them that you have confidence in their abilities and that you will support them every step of the way.
Exposing Children to Diverse Experiences and Role Models
Encourage curiosity: Foster a sense of curiosity in your child by encouraging them to ask questions, explore new ideas, and seek out new experiences.
Expose them to different cultures: Introduce your child to different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. This will broaden their perspectives and help them appreciate diversity.
Positive role models: Expose your child to positive role models in various fields, such as science, arts, sports, and entrepreneurship. This will inspire them and show them what is possible.
Be a role model: Demonstrating your ambitions and dreams helps your child understand the importance of having aspirations and your journey and drive to accomplish them.
Emphasizing Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is the belief that skills and intellect can be enhanced by committing oneself to hard work, perseverance, and determination. By encouraging resilience and perseverance, parents and educators can help children overcome challenges, develop a positive attitude toward learning, and ultimately achieve their goals.
The Power of Perseverance and Resilience
Teach children that challenges are a natural part of life and can be overcome with perseverance and resilience. Encourage children to focus on their efforts, hard work, and strategies rather than solely on the end result. This helps them understand that setbacks and failures are not the end, but opportunities for growth and learning, and to keep trying even when things get tough.
Be there for your children when they encounter difficulties. Provide emotional support, offer guidance, and help them develop coping strategies.
Cultivating a Can-Do Attitude and Belief in Self
Empower children to believe in their capabilities and to approach new challenges with a can-do attitude. Share with them your personal setbacks and how your belief in yourself is key to success. Tell them stories of people who have achieved great things through hard work and determination.
Imagine if Thomas Edison had stopped dreaming after his first few failures? The world might never be as bright now.
Walt Disney faced numerous setbacks and failures, but never gave up on his dream of creating a magical world for kids.
Elon Musk, the entrepreneur behind Tesla, SpaceX, and other ground-breaking ventures faced countless hurdles and setbacks on his path to success.
Encourage your child to dream big, set goals, take risks, and embrace new opportunities. Remind them that their sky should never be limited by anyone else’s perception of what is possible.

Teaching Goal Setting and Action Planning
By teaching children how to set goals and create action plans, we empower them to take concrete steps towards achieving their dreams.
Start with the big dream: Help children identify their big dream and encourage them to think about what it will take to achieve it.
Break it down: A helpful way to do this is to break ambitions down into more achievable, bite-sized chunks; this strategy not only lessens the feeling of being overwhelmed, but also gives children a sense of accomplishment with each step completed.
Create action plans: Teach children how to create action plans for each goal. Help them identify specific actions they need to take and set deadlines for each step.
Track progress: Encourage children to track their progress towards their goals. This could be done through a chart or a journal where they can record their accomplishments.
Along the way, it is crucial to remind children that challenges and obstructions are a part of the process and should not dissuade them from continuing towards their dreams.
Supporting and Celebrating Achievements
Providing guidance and resources to support children’s dreams
Encourage open communication and active listening to understand their aspirations. Research and provide resources, such as books, classes, or mentorship programs, to help them pursue their interests.
Foster a positive and nurturing environment that encourages creativity and exploration.
Celebrate Milestones and Successes
Recognize and celebrate even the smallest accomplishments to boost their self-confidence and motivation.
Organize special activities or outings to commemorate significant milestones.
Express your pride and excitement verbally or through gestures such as hugs, high-fives, or small rewards.

Remember, as parents and caregivers, we have the power to be the ultimate dream supporters, cheering our little champions on every step of the way. Believing in their big dreams and equipping them with the necessary tools and resources is like giving them a superhero cape to conquer the world.
Nurturing these lofty dreams has a ripple effect that goes far beyond their childhood. When we encourage our children to dream big, we’re instilling in them a fiery ambition, a rock-solid self-belief, and a resilient spirit that can weather any storm. We teach them that failure is not a roadblock but a stepping stone towards growth and wisdom.
So, hold their hands and let their dreams run wild. Don’t let anyone turn their sky into a boring old ceiling.
I am parting this post with the magic of Randy Pausch – The Last Lecture “Achieving your Childhood Dream”. Just like Randy, we’re here to remind you that dreams are the fuel that powers our little adventurers.
